U Power plans to install 55 battery-swapping stations for Hong Kong taxis

Chinese EV battery swapping stations provider U Power has installed the first of 55 smart battery swapping stations it has planned for Hong Kong.

The company aims to create a battery-swap ecosystem that can support the transition of Hong Kong’s fleet of 18,000 taxis to EVs. It will be able to support a range of vehicle types, including electric buses and ferries.

The company has signed an agreement with the Hong Kong Taxi Drivers & Operators Association to promote the electrification of taxis enabled by its UOTTA system, which offers automatic, fast and cost-efficient battery swapping services.

As more swapping stations are installed and more EVs connect to its Battery Bank operations, U Power intends to introduce a Web3-based Battery Token, which will offer drivers the option to earn cryptocurrency tokens with each battery swap. The tokens will be tradeable for electricity tariff credits.

U Power is also implementing its Energy Service Provider power-swap model beyond Hong Kong. The Company is establishing agreements with ESP partners in Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore. The company plans to sell and service 600 battery-swapping vehicles and operate six battery-swapping stations in Macau as well as 5,000 battery-swapping vehicles and 50 battery-swapping stations in Singapore.
