The 2026 GMC Hummer EV Just Got More Outrageous

- The 2026 GMC Hummer EV gets more absurd and practical at the same time.
- There’s a new special edition which can sprint to 60 miles per hour faster than a Tesla Model 3 Performance.
- It now gets a new “King Crab Mode” and bidirectional charging capability.
The GMC Hummer EV has always been the antithesis of the small, affordable EVs we’re clamoring for—a 9,000-pound rolling building that’s inefficient and unapologetically excessive. Its massive battery could power a village for a week and it can smoke sports cars in a straight line. Apparently, that still wasn’t enough. So for the model year 2026, General Motors has turned the absurdity up another notch.
The 2026 GMC Hummer EV is now even quicker. It’s a tenth quicker to 60 than the Tesla Model 3 Performance despite weighing more than double the electric sedan. That’s thanks to the new Carbon Fiber Edition, which can zoom to 60 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds. It gets all-terrain tires wrapped around 22-inch carbon fiber wheels; carbon fiber inserts on the mirror caps and skid plate; and a unique Magnus Gray paint with a Velocity Ember interior theme.

There are meaningful upgrades too, such as bidirectional charging capability with both vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) charging. This essentially turns the Hummer’s 200+ kilowatt-hour battery into a rolling power bank—capable of charging other EVs, powering tools and even running a home during a blackout. I saw the battery pack at GM’s Technical Center in Michigan last week—it was as big as a king-size mattress and weighed nearly 3,000 pounds, roughly the same as an entire BYD Seagull, and about 600 lbs more than a Mazda MX-5 Miata.
The other major addition is what GMC calls the “King Crab Mode,” which makes the rear wheels steer faster than the front wheels to make the EV more maneuverable in tight off-road conditions. The Hummer EV already had all-wheel steering—which has come to become more common on large, high-end sedans and SUVs. Model year 2022 through 2025 will also get this feature through an over-the-air software update later this year.

Despite the steep $96,550 starting price for the Hummer EV Pickup and SUV, GM has actually managed to sell plenty of these in the U.S. The automaker sold 13,993 units of the EV last year and 3,479 units in the first quarter of this year—the latter is a 108% year-over-year sales growth, according to Cox Automotive. The model year 2025 truck gets 367 miles of EPA range whereas the SUV is good for 314 miles.
Production and deliveries of the model year 2026 truck will begin later this year. GM will announce prices and updated range estimates closer to deliveries. V2L is a welcome addition, and that should broaden its appeal, assuming the dealerships do a good enough job of educating their buyers about the benefits. But one thing’s clear: one of the most outrageous EVs on the road just got even more absurd, and maybe even a little more practical.
