Comau and Intecells use cold plasma to boost battery electrode production efficiency
Comau has announced a partnership with Intecells to implement cold plasma technology for more efficient manufacturing of battery electrodes. Intecells’ patented cold plasma process removes the need for traditional solvents and binders in electrode fabrication—streamlining production and potentially cutting energy usage, investment costs and process emissions in half.
According to Comau, plasma-based solutions can directly integrate into existing electrode manufacturing lines, significantly improving cycle time, energy efficiency, cell capacity and cycle life. A new plasma-based process is now in development that could further simplify battery electrode manufacturing by reducing the number of production steps.
This jointly developed approach covers all battery sizes and types, promising enhancements in both cell performance and safety. Its principal goal is to deliver economically viable plasma processes for scalable, high-volume manufacturing operations within existing battery production plants.
“Our collaboration with Intecells marks a pivotal step in redefining how battery cells are manufactured,” said Gian Carlo Tronzano, Head of Battery Cell Global Competence Center and of P&E e-Mobility at Comau. “By combining Intecells’ disruptive technology with Comau’s electrification technology and expertise, we are working to deliver a practical path for integrating next-generation plasma processes into existing production lines, starting with the validation of cold plasma technology within scalable manufacturing operations.”
“Our partnership with Comau gives Intecells the means needed to accelerate development, will revolutionize the way battery cells are manufactured and will support our customers globally,” said Xiaohong Gayden, founder and CEO of Intecells.
